Lichen planus
Lichen planus is a serious skin disorder which can affect anyone, irrespective of age or gender. About 1 in 5,000 people develop lichen planus. However, there are certain factors which put one at a higher risk of developing this disease. They are as follows:
- Most cases occur in people over the age of 45, therefore middle aged people are at a higher risk of developing the disease.
- It is more common among middle aged women, rather than men.
- Women are more prone to develop lichen planus in their mouth.
- If you are under heavy medications.
- If you have mercury fillings in your teeth.
- If you are exposed to chemicals used to develop colour photographs.
- Patients who suffer from liver disease or hepatitis C.
The good news about this skin disorder is that it is not an inherited disease, or a type of cancer nor is it an infection which is contagious, therefore it cannot be caught or passed on to others. However, the bad news is that it can take over weeks, months or even up to two years to disappear. Therefore, if you are suffering from lichen planus or a persistent and irritating rash which is taking too long to go away, it is best to seek medical treatment at the earliest.
