Lichen planus is a chronic, recurrent and itchy rash which non-infectious inflammatory skin disorder. It is characterised by small, flat topped polygonal lumps or bumps, which mainly grow together to form rough scaly plaques on the skin. These can appear on any part of the body, especially in areas covered by mucous membranes. They are most likely to appear as lumps or bumps on the wrists, ankles, inside the mouth and on the scalp.
Causes: It is caused due to inflammation in the skin and mucous membranes. Factors that can trigger are –

• Hepatitis C infection
• Flu vaccine
• Certain chemicals
• Some medicines for heart disease, high BP or arthritis

Symptoms:

• Purple-coloured itchy, flat-topped papules with interspersed lacy white lines
• Blisters that may break to form crusts
• Watch out for lacy white patches in the mouth
• Nail damage
• Hair loss
