Diet for Arthritis

What to eat

Eat fish

Include fish in your diabetes diet plan, especially steamed, poached or fish curry. Fish oils contain anti-inflammatory agents. According to a study, moderate amounts of fish benefits arthritic patients by easing the pain to some extent. Fish oil suppressed the production of leukotriene B-4, an inflammatory substance that aggravates arthritic symptoms.

Have ginger daily

Try a little ginger every day. It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurveda. This anti-inflammatory agent might help to soothe the pain. So, consume at least 5 gram of ginger thrice a day. It can be incorporated in cooking or consumed as juice. You can also mix ginger with water and taken thrice a day.

Low-sodium diet

It counteracts water retention in tissues, which can aggravate the swelling that accompanies arthritis.

Fruits and veggies

Incorporate fresh fruits, vegetables, jowar, bajra, nuts, seeds and whole pulses in your diabetic diet.

Alsi seeds

Eat at least 2 tablespoons of alsi seed powder every day. Rich in Omega-3 fats, they will help in reducing pain in the joints.

What to avoid

Vegetable oils

Avoid vegetable oils since too much Omega-6 type of fatty acids may trigger inflammation. The best oil to use is olive oil or til oil.

No to meat

Exclude all meats, especially red meat, since it contains saturated fats, which stimulates inflammatory agents in the body. It also causes uric acid build-ups and cause joint inflammation. Some preserved types of meats such as cold cuts, ham and bacon contain preservatives and chemicals that can trigger arthritic reactions in some people.

Reduce intake of dairy products

Cut down on saturated fat by excluding milk products such as cheese, butter and ghee.

Avoid all forms of sugar

This includes colas, soft drinks, pastries, cakes and mithais. Sugar can add fuel to fire since it strips the body of essential nutrients. The artificial sweetener aspartame should be avoided by people suffering from arthritis.
