What is Depression?

A disease which causes severe disturbances in one’s feelings and behaviour, resulting in dysfunction and inability to carry out daily activities, can be termed as a mental disorder or illness. There are over 200 classified forms of mental disorders, among them, the most common disorders are namely depression, anxiety, OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) and insomnia.
Depression refers to a mental condition, where a person feels discouraged and disinterested in life. It may also affect a person’s ability to carry out daily activities such as eating, sleeping, etc.
We all face occasional feelings of anxiety, before a test, or making important decisions. However, an anxiety disorder refers to a situation, when a person is in a constant state of worry and nervousness.
OCD refers to a disorder, wherein a person feels an uncontrollable urge to repeat their actions. People who suffer from OCD also have an uncontrollable fear of germs and a need for order.
Insomnia refers to the inability to sleep. People suffering from insomnia find it difficult to go to sleep, often wake up at random hours and feel tired after waking up.
Though each of these disorders are different, they share a similarity in their causes and symptoms.
